Fiber is an important part of a healthy diet.  Getting 25-35 grams of fiber per day is one of the best ways to promote health and assist with a weight management program.

Despite the understanding of the role fiber plays in maintaining general health and lowering cholestrol, many Americans consume only half the amount of daily fiber recommended by experts. Fiber is available as a supplement in several forms including tablets, capsules and powders.  The average American currently eats a mere 3 to 4 grams of soluble fiber a day – about half the amount recommended by the American Dietetic Association (ADA).

Some of the fiber supplements (available in powder and pill forms) are designed to help alleviate constipation, and are to be used for a limited time only. That’s because if a person has chronic constipation, the cause needs to be determined.

Try just a small spoon of fiber once a day and build up to the recommended dose on the label. Most fiber supplements will recommend that you take the product with lots of water, and to make sure you are drinking enough water for the rest of the day as well.

Though nutritional fiber supplements can help you conveniently meet the required fiber intake, you should not limit themselves to such supplements.

Other fiber supplements may include soy lecithin, alfalfa, and slippery elm. Slippery elm is very mucilaginous and nutritious.

Weight loss fiber supplements do work when used within a sensible eating and exercise weight loss strategy.

If you have a gastrointestinal disease or condition, get your doctor’s approval before taking a fiber supplement.
