Often marketed as protein bars, energy bars, meal replacement bars, or diet bars, these products have become as ubiquitous as snack or candy bars although nutrition bars are generally larger and claim to contain significantly more protein.

In the current bar-wars environment, there are literally hundreds of these prewrapped and portable products competing for shelf space at gyms, health-food stores, and supermarkets, with names ranging from PowerBar and Luna Bar to Balance Bar and MET-Rx. Nutritional bars can serve as a great snack or meal replacement for the jolt of energy needed in the middle of the day.But nutritionists agree that not all bars are created equal. A consumer lab study of nutrition bars has shown that many bars exceed sugar claims by an average of 8g, adding another two teaspoons of sugar to the mix. The truth is no nutrition bar is capable of replacing wholesome nutrient-dense food. And while eating an energy bar is certainly a better alternative to skipping a meal or having a high-fat dessert, the hype surrounding energy bars far outweighs their actual merits.

One of LUNA’s new products is LUNA Minis, which are a little less than half the size of the regular bars and are only 80 calories each. The bars contain 4 grams of protein, are high in folic acid and a good source of calcium and antioxidants.

When people take daily vitamins or eat products fortified with fiber or other powerful nutrients, the consumption of a bar or two per day may put them over the recommended level of a particular vitamin.

Nutritionist Nancy Clark, MS, RD, points out that anything that provides calories will give you some energy.

In terms of future innovation, nutrition and energy bar manufacturers must continue to evolve formulas in terms of taste and functional benefits, and that consumers of such products want protein and vitamins in their food, but are also interested in whole grains, antioxidants and omega-3 fatty acids.
